Il weekend: femminismo e survival story dell’età senile

Sopravvivere

Come ogni narratore sa, quando metti due o più persone in un luogo chiuso senza tante possibilità (o nessuna) di uscire, hai in mano uno dei  meccanismi narrativi più potenti di tutti. Si chiamano survival story non solo perché si è in effettivo pericolo di vita, ma perché la cattività innesca meccanismi mentali e spirituali, azioni e reazioni che in situazioni di normalità e libertà non avrebbero luogo. E anche a quelli bisogna saper sopravvivere.

Ma femminismo, survival story e senilità non si vedono spesso nello stesso racconto. Quando si parla di senilità spesso si racconta solo di decadenza e morte. Se parliamo di femminismo inquadriamo più spesso una certa fascia d’età e le survival story di solito non sono popolate da vecchie signore che parlano tra loro. Non a caso Reginald Rose quando chiuse in una stanzetta dodici estranei a decidere della vita di un ragazzo nero nella sceneggiatura di Twelve Hungry Men, li fece tutti uomini (era anche il ’57). Nel 1944 quando Alfred Hitchcock quando girò Lifeboat, da una storia di John Steinbeck aveva dei naufraghi che si trovano a dividere lo spazio ristretto di una scialuppa nell’immenso oceano atlantico. Ci mise dentro più uomini che donne ed erano tutti giovani e forti.

Charlotte Wood, autrice di Il weekend, pubblicato da NN editore, mette invece tre donne anziane in una casa sull’oceano e in un solo fine settimana fa succedere di tutto.

Il weekend

Tre donne che hanno superato i settanta si trovano a passare il Natale chiuse a casa della loro amica, morta ormai da un anno. Lo scopo della riunione è quello di mettere in ordine le sue cose, o buttarle via.

Per trovare la chiave della cattività bisogna cercare l’innesco. In Twelve Hungry Men è il dissenso. In Lifeboat la lotta di classe. Per Charlotte Wood dipende tutto dai segreti. Dunque, sotto le mentite spoglie di un romanzo femminile senile, incentrato sui rapporti di amicizia, amore e sul lento declino del corpo e nella mente, Il weekend nasconde la tensione drammatica di un thriller.

La chimica dei sentimenti

Parliamo della loro età. A guardarle da lontano le tre amiche de Il weekend hanno tutte uno stesso rapporto con la vecchiaia: sono stanche e infastidite da questa loro condizione. Ma analizzate singolarmente queste donne vedono la senilità in modo diverso. Per Jude, che è sempre stata una donna controllata, si tratta di un momento in cui sopraggiungono sentimenti troppo forti e pungenti, fastidiosissimi, il cui avvento lei fa risalire, nella migliore delle ipotesi, al  decadimento della mente.

Non era la prima volta che accadeva. Si svegliava presto, nella luce ancora livida, non un desiderio sereno ma impellente di andare in chiesa. Declino cognitivo, senza dubbio.

Per Wendy la vecchiaia è un momento disordinato, in cui non riesce bene a mettere a fuoco i pensieri. Da sempre abituata ad essere la più brillante, la scrittrice affermata, adesso non è capace di far revisionare la macchina, le amiche l’accusano di non saper guidare e non riesce a fermare un’idea che le è venuta in mente.

In terrazza dopo aver rotto la caraffa, aveva avuto diverse illuminazioni, e doveva rifletterci prima che svanissero.

Per Adele la vecchiaia è legata indissolubilmente al corpo. È il decadimento fisico il suo cruccio.

Il bisogno di andare in bagno continuava a tormentarla, a infastidirla. Quella sensazione sognante di prima dell’alba stava piano piano svanendo. Ma l’avrebbe trattenuta. Trattenerla faceva bene al corpo, in realtà. (…) Magari sì faceva bene al corpo, ma allo spirito faceva malissimo.

Vecchia sì, morta no

Per tutte la vecchiaia è diversa, ma si tratta sempre di passaggi di stato. L’intero libro è basato su questo processo. Ci si aspetterebbe una sorta di calma nell’età senile, e invece è tutto in fermento. C’è il passaggio dalla giovinezza alla vecchiaia, naturalmente, dal successo alla sconfitta, dal vero al falso, dall’amicizia all’odio. Dalla vita alla morte. Ma c’è un altro passaggio di stato: quello dal silenzio alla voce, come dicevamo prima, ovvero dal segreto al disvelamento. Per impedire questo passaggio di stato si lotta spesso tutta la vita.

Sentimenti, mente e corpo

Nonostante i tre caratteri così diversi le tre amiche –  in tre soli giorni – si difendono  da numerosissimi attacchi esterni. C’è qualcosa di animalesco in queste loro reazioni. Proteggono il branco dalle minacce ambientali, salvo poi avere sporadiche ma accese guerre intestine. La loro relazione triangolare è piena di insidie, ma gli equilibri riescono a mantenersi grazie a strumenti quali la diplomazia, i cibi caldi, i ricordi, il silenzio e, appunto, i segreti, la manifestazione più ampia e complessa del silenzio.

Di trappola in trappola si arriva al finale: lo svelamento di un segreto che mette in pericolo la loro amicizia, l’ultimo incidente al quale sopravvivere. Eppure questo segreto, come le oscure minacce dei thriller, viene magistralmente omesso dal dialogo in forma diretta. A dimostrazione del continuo scopo tensivo e non accomodante di questa narrazione, il centro è vuoto, e fa paura.

I luoghi della sopravvivenza

È vero che la casa di Bittoes dove le donne si trovano rinchiuse rappresenta il luogo dove tutti i nodi si scioglieranno, ma in questa storia il posto dove si è chiamati a sopravvivere per un weekend non è del tutto fisico. È vero che la cattività porta a esprimersi più francamente, e che l’assottigliarsi delle relazioni genera reazioni più intense, ma qui la villetta a due piani non è né lo spazio angusto di una barchetta in mezzo all’oceano, né una sala nel palazzo del tribunale di Philadelphia. È la vecchiaia lo spazio claustrofobico che non permette di fuggire. La Wood tratta l’età senile come un tempo in cui c’è troppo spazio nel passato e poco nel futuro. È questo che non permette alle amiche di muoversi agevolmente e con fiducia. Ma quando il corpo non  risponde bene e la mente fa scherzi stare stretti, forse, non è poi così male.

Gli uomini, grandi assenti

Tranne una comparsata del toy boy regista, gli uomini nella storia sono assenti. Sono morti, o hanno un’ altra famiglia o sono scappati anni prima, non se ne trova traccia se non nei ricordi. Come scrisse Lidia Ravera anni fa in un I quaderni di Panta:

Quando le donne parlano d’amore, io cambio stanza. (…) se si chiede loro di raccontare l’uomo di cui sono innamorate, o di cui vorrebbero innamorarsi, descrivono… una donna.”

E allora chi ha bisogno degli uomini, alla fine di questo viaggio? Perché prendersela tanto? Chiuse in casa, sole, affaticate ma attive e presenti a se stesse. Nonostante tutti i litigi e le incomprensioni, le tre amiche si ritrovano comunque insieme, comunque affrancate da ogni delusione se possono sostenersi l’una con l’altra. La sorellanza come elemento cui fare riferimento sempre fa di questa storia un bellissimo ritratto di come tutte noi potremmo essere da vecchie: con un corpo diverso, ma con gli stessi desideri e sensazioni della giovinezza, a cercare negli altri quell’identikit e a trovarlo sempre, invece, nelle persone di tutta una vita.
